Devils Daily: The One Where the Devils Got Busy
Sharangovich drawing interest, Meier wants eight years in New Jersey
Newark, NJ – Friday taught us plenty about GM Tom Fitzgerald’s current state, negotiating with his major free agents and gauging trade interest on others. It’s evident that as soon as the Stanley Cup was awarded, the Devils got busy. Fitzgerald isn’t the only GM looking to make deals, however. The rumor mill is already churning including one big name that has the chance to make history if traded.
It’s bound to be a busy summer of trades with what’s been said to be a “fucking awful” UFA class. There’s plenty we’ve heard on the trade front, too.
Let’s dive in.
New Jersey Devils
New Jersey Hockey Now: After filing for team-elected arbitration with Timo Meier on Thursday, Tom Fitzgerald revealed on Friday that Meier’s agent Clause Lemiuex was told to negotiate a long-term extension to stay in New Jersey.
More NJHN – There’s only so much room to go around in any lineup. No one knows that more than Yegor Sharangovich who found himself as a healthy scratch down the line of the regular season. Yet, the young, versatile forward is drawing interest from other clubs.
The Athletic: Among a few other bits of information, Pierre LeBrun provided an update on the status of pending RFA MacKenzie Blackwood. According to the insider, the Devils are exploring trade options for the 26-year-old goaltender.
National Hockey Now
Boston Bruins
Boston Hockey Now: When the Bruins fired Bruce Cassidy last year, the rumor was Patrice Bergeron wanted him out. However, they were just rumors. According to Vegas Golden Knights team president George McPhee, the Boston Bruins captain gave Cassidy an emphatic stamp of approval that led to his hire.
San Jose Sharks
San Jose Hockey Now: There’s word that the Sharks and Erik Karlsson have mutually agreed to continue exploring trade options this summer. A potential trade could make salary cap history if facilitated.
Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas Hockey Now: Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon doesn’t mince words. Just days after winning the Stanley Cup, he’s already back to work providing updates on his players. Those updates include the status of Robin Lehner and Ivan Barbashev’s future.
Washington Capitals
Washington Hockey Now: There was a sense that the Capitals might entertain the idea of trading Tom Wilson. However, according to Sportsnets Elliote Friedman, the Capitals want to keep him as a “big part of the future.”
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings have five pending UFAs. DHN has learned Detroit is unlikely to re-sign any of them. The Red Wings already extended offers to Pius Suter and Alex Chiasson, but they were refuted.
