Devils Daily: The One Where Fitzgerald Snagged Toffoli
GM Tom Fitzgerald was busy on Tuesday acquiring Toffoli, shipping Sharangovich & Blackwood
Newark, NJ – Well, New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald certainly knows how to turn your average Tuesday into an exciting one. The Devils got down to business yesterday, shipping out goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood and Yegor Sharangovich in separate trades. In exchange for Sharangovich and the 80th overall selection tomorrow in the third round of the draft, the Devils acquired Tyler Toffoli. He asked to be traded, so maybe we should have seen this coming. However, if you had “Fitzgerald snagged Toffoli” on your bingo card, congrats, you win.
Fitzgerald wasn’t the only active GM around the league, however. With the draft set to kick off tonight, plenty of action went down around the NHL.
Let’s dive in.

More BHN: The Bruins acquired Dmitry Orlov at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline. He worked out quite well for Boston. Although they want to retain him, GM Don Sweeney isn’t confident they can.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche selected Alex Newhook 16th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. The Avs sold high on Newhook, trading him to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for 31st and 37th overall picks at tonight’s draft.
San Jose Sharks
San Jose Hockey Now: From the Sharks’ perspective, San Jose acquires Mackenzie Blackwood from New Jersey. The Sharks’ newest netminder will enter the internal competition for time in San Jose’s crease.
Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The brewing blockbuster between the Flyers and St. Louis Blues fizzled out and never happened. However, Kevin Hayes still found his way to the Blues as he was finally traded on Tuesday.
Calgary Flames
Calgary Hockey Now: From the Flames’ perspective, Calgary wasn’t in a position of strength to deal Toffoli following a trade request. As a result, the return is underwhelming.
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal Hockey Now: Because he was behind so many big names in Colorado, Newhook didn’t quite pan out for the Avs. With a lot more opportunities for him to succeed in Montreal, this could be his time to shine.
