Game Preview: New Jersey Devils Visit the New York Rangers in Preseason Matchup

The New Jersey Devils visit the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden tonight in a preseason matchup.

Last Game

The Devils took part in a split-squad contest on Monday. Half of the roster remained in Newark to play at home against the Philadelphia Flyers. The other half traveled to Montreal to take on the Canadiens. Jesper Bratt led the Devils at home to a 6-0 victory over the Flyers collecting three assists. Jack Hughes, also collecting three points (1g,2a), led New Jersey to a 4-2 victory over Montreal on the road. Vitek Vanecek made 11/11 saves at home while Akira Schmid made 16/18 saves on the road.

Devils/Rangers

The Devils earned a 3-0-1 record against the Rangers in 2022-23. They outscored their rival 14-10 in four regular season matchups.

J. Hughes led the Devils in points against New York last season, scoring four goals and two assists for six points.

The Devils topped the Rangers in three out of four regular season contests in 2022-23. It’s the first time since the 2017-18 season that the Devils took a season series over New York.

New Jersey met the Rangers in the first round of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The series went seven games before the Devils ultimately eliminated the Blueshirts. Akira Schmid shut out the Rangers in a 4-0 Game 7 victory. Schmid accrued a 4-1 record against the Rangers in the playoffs with a 1.38 GAA and .951 SV%.
