New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators face off for the first time in the 2023-24 season tonight.

Yesterday, head coach Lindy Ruff ran an emotional, tough practice, emphasizing attacking the net far more often than New Jersey has been. We’ll see if that translates into tonight’s contest.

Tonight’s goaltender is undetermined, however, we do know it won’t be Akira Schmid. We’ll end up seeing both goaltenders this weekend as the Devils play the Boston Bruins tomorrow. That means we should see Nico Daws’ season debut within the next two days.

Let’s dive into the Devils’ tilt with the Senators tonight.

The Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets engaged in an overtime thriller on Wednesday. The Blue Jackets opened the scoring and traded goals with the Devils three separate times through 57 minutes of the game. Luke Hughes’ coast-to-coast goal late in the third period sent the Metropolitan Division rivals into overtime. Picking up an overturned puck by the Jackets, Timo Meier sprung for a breakaway and beat Columbus goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to secure the 4-3 victory for New Jersey. Vitek Vanecek stopped 26 pucks on 29 shots while securing the win.

Player to Watch

With five points in his last five games, Dawson Mercer is tonight’s player to watch. Mercer logged his second goal for the season on Fri., Nov. 10, vs Washington, which also marked his 100th career point. At age 22, 14 days, Mercer became the 14th youngest Devil in franchise history who earned his 100th career point. Kirk Muller, 20 years, 12 days, was the youngest Devil who earned all 100 of his career points (34g-66a) with the franchise. Mercer is fresh off his first three-point effort (1g-2a) for 2023-24, and owns five points (2g-3a) in his last three games played. The youngster’s eight points (4g-4a) in December rank third on New Jersey behind J. Hughes (6g-5a) and J. Bratt (5g-8a).
