Devils Daily: Weird Prospect Goal; Flames Markstrom Conundrum
The New Jersey Devils will be off today.
Yesterday, the Devils couldn’t back up the efforts of Nico Daws to overcome the Boston Bruins. Down in Utica, a Comets forward scored a really unique goal that you’re unlikely to see again, at least not for a long time.
Elsewhere, the Jacob Markstrom conundrum from Calgary’s perspective, the case for Boston’s head coach in the Jack Adams race, and Jonathan Drouin’s return to Montreal bring mixed reviews.
Let’s do that hockey.
New Jersey Devils
New Jersey Hockey Now: Devils prospect and Utica Comets forward Ryan Schmelzer scored a unique 6-on-3 shorthanded goal on Monday against the Syracuse Crunch. You gotta see it.
More NJHN: Nico Daws put forth another fantastic effort in Monday’s matinee. Too bad the Devils couldn’t back him up in the 3-0 shutout loss. Read up on the takeaways.
NHL.com: The NHL announced that will play in the Canadian Tire 3-on-3 Showcase on Feb. 1 to conclude the NHL All-Star Thursday. Devils director of player development Meghan Duggan will serve as coach for Team Kloss.

Calgary Flames
Calgary Hockey Now: Jacob Markstrom’s situation is a conundrum. The Swedish goaltender is playing some of the best hockey he has in his career. The Flames are benefitting from it. He also owns a no-move clause and apparently won’t be asked to waive it unless it’s a “massive offer.” This whole situation is certainly a brutal catch-22.
Boston Bruins
Boston Hockey Now: Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery is headed to a second-straight all-star weekend as the bench boss for the Atlantic Division. The second-year bench boss also deserves to be in the conversation for a second-straight Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s best head coach.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado Hockey Now: Valeri Nichushkin, who missed Colorado’s last game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, is entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal Hockey Now: Jonathan Drouin’s return to Montreal drew mixed reviews. However, when the moment for his video tribute came, Montreal fans gave the former Habs forward a standing ovation.
Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now:
Philadelphia got to welcome back forward Noah Cates from the injured reserve on Monday. The 24-year-old missed 22 games – or more than a quarter of the season – with a broken foot sustained on Nov. 25.
