All-Star Player Draft Results: Team Hughes Drafts Devils Jesper Bratt
First time All-Star Jesper Bratt is selected by teammate Jack Hughes to Team Hughes on Thursday night.
New Jersey Devils forward Jesper Bratt will play for Team Hughes at this weekend’s NHL All-Star Game.
The NHL wanted to make the NHL All-Star Game more fun. So, they added the All-Star Player Draft. Jack Hughes might not be playing in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game this weekend. However, he’s still in Toronto and co-captaining Team Hughes with his brother, Quinn Hughes, and Grammy Award-winning musician Michael Bublé. Because Jack is injured and unable to play, the NHL assigned Elias Pettersson the assistant captain role for Team Hughes.
Part of the fun in the player draft was to see if the players drafting players would take their teammates.
“Players drafting other players, the storylines that come out of it once we talk about, ‘Will they take their teammates, will they take their former teammates, guys they grew up with, will they not take their teammates?’” Executive VP Steve Mayer said to NHL.com. “It’s good TV, it’s a lot of fun. It’s going to be fast; we’re going to do the whole draft in an hour. … I think it’s going to be a fun night, fast-moving, and we’re really happy that we decided to do it.”
Team Hughes did, in fact, select Bratt, the first-time All-Star, for their team. The pick was announced by Bratt’s teammate, Jack, however, he wasn’t the first pick.
Selected first overall by Jack, Quinn, and Bublé was Tampa Bay Lightning forward, Nikita Kucherov. Then followed by Quinn’s teammate, goaltender Thatcher Demko, Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor and Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk. Bratt was selected fifth by Team Hughes.
Here’s the entire Team Hughes roster that includes their celebrity captain, Michael Bublé: Jack Hughes (won’t play), Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson, Nikita Kucherov, Thatcher Demko, Kyle Connor, Brady Tkachuk, Jesper Bratt, Cam Talbot, Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller, Frank Vatrano.
Although Bratt replaced Hughes in the All-Star event, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal replaced Hughes in the skills competition.
As a result, there won’t be a Devils representative in Friday’s 7 P.M. skills competition. The All-Star Game starts at 3 P.M. on Saturday afternoon. Team Hughes plays Team Matthews in their first matchup.
