Report: Insider Reveals Renewed Interest in Two Goaltending Devils Trade Targets
Jacob Markstrom and Linus Ullmark remain high on the Devils’ trade target wish list.
According to a report, New Jersey Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerlad has not backed off his wishlist for goaltenders in a Devils trade.
Insider Pierre LeBrun via The Athletic revealed that the Devils’ GM remains interested in acquiring Calgary Flames goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, or Boston Bruins goaltender, Linus Ullmark in a Devils trade.
We learned back in February that Markstrom waived his no-move clause, agreeing to the concept of being traded to the Devils before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. According to LeBrun, Markstrom remains willing to tend the net in New Jersey if a Devils trade comes to fruition. However, he also revealed that other teams have shown interest in the 34-year-old Calgary goaltender.
Earlier on Tuesday, Fitzgerald explained he is willing to deal the 10th overall pick at the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft. However, via Flames Talk on the Sportsnet Radio Network, Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli believes that Markstrom alone isn’t enough for the Flames to acquire the 10th overall selection.
“I think it would take more than [Markstrom],” Seravalli said. “I think the Flames would need to add something to make that happen.”
As for Ullmark, several teams have lined up at the Boston GM’s door for the former Vezina Trophy winner. It sounds like his price tag is higher than Markstrom’s, which is where the 10th overall selection could come into play.
Whereas Fitzgerald is open to moving the draft pick, he also explained he’d like to acquire a player with some control.
“I’m more than willing to move the pick for the right asset,” Fitzgerald told The Athletic. “One that we control, one that’s probably in the same demographic as our team — maybe not 23, 24 years old but somebody we control for a few years.
“Nothing’s come my way yet, though.”
The 2024 NHL Draft gets underway on June 28th in Las Vegas at The Sphere. By then, or on the draft floor, we could learn who the Devils’ No.1 goaltender will be for the 2024-25 season.
