The 2024 NHL Draft is just a few weeks away, and while many are dissecting which prospect the New Jersey Devils may select at 10 overall, General Manager Tom Fitzgerald continues to pour gasoline on the ‘trading away the pick’ fire mentioning a potential Devils trade.

Speaking with Mike Morreale of NHL.com, Fitzgerald continues that he’s willing to deal the pick.

“If we feel it helps us now and in the foreseeable future, then, yes, I’m listening. I haven’t gotten anything yet but the more I talk to teams, I say ‘Listen, I’m open to moving No. 10, but it’s going to have to be something (significant),” the Devils GM told NHL.com. “At the end of the day, we’re in a position now versus two years ago when we drafted (defenseman) Simon Nemec (No. 2 in the 2022 NHL Draft) where if we can find the right piece to help us get to where we want to go today, tomorrow and wherever the controllable future is for that player, great. I’m in the goalie market talking to teams, but there’s a ‘but’ and the ‘but’ is how do we want to build our team?” We’d like to add up front, we’d like to add on the back end, so what are those pieces going to cost us. With the goaltending, what’s that going to cost us?”

Fitzgerald continues to stay adamant that he is willing to make a trade for a goaltender. The question becomes who may be worthy of the 10 overall selection. At one point or another, the Devils have explored trades for Calgary’s Jacob Markstrom, Boston’s Linus Ullmark, and Nashville’s Juuse Saros. However, all three have major question marks and may not be worthy of the 10 overall selection.

He also mentions a willingness to add up front and on the back end, leaving all trade avenues open. A Devils trade involving either a forward or a defenseman for the 10th pick would be a blockbuster. The clock is ticking toward the draft day and by the sounds of it, Fitzgerald may be ready to make a potential league-changing trade.
