Devils Daily: Linus Ullmark Obstacle; What’s Next for Juuse Saros?
We’ve finally made it to Friday, the eve of the Stanley Cup Final. The closer we get to wrapping up the 2023-24 season, the sooner we will get some clarity as to what the New Jersey Devils’ roster will look like for the 2024-25 campaign.
In the links, the Devils’ biggest threat to swipe a goaltending trade target comes from within the Metropolitan Division. Also, some pending free agents who would fit in with the Devils at the center position.
Elsewhere, what’s the future look like for Juuse Saros and Nashville? Could Jake Guentel end up in San Jose? And, how Florida’s GM built a powerhouse.
Let’s do that hockey.
Devils News
New Jersey Hockey Now: The worst kept secret in the NHL is that the Devils need a legitimate starting goaltender. Boston Bruins netminder, Linus Ullmark, is a goaltender of interest to Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald. However, New Jersey’s biggest threat to outbid them comes from within the Metropolitan Division.
More NJHN: Another need the Devils have to address this summer is down the middle of the ice. New Jersey certainly has some options to fill the third-line center role next season. However, Fitzgerald could opt for the free agent market to fill the void. Here are five options via NJHN’s Nick Natale.

Florida Hockey Now: The evolution of the Florida Panthers has been something to marvel at. The Cats went from a bottom-dwelling franchise who were barely able to fill the seats of their arena, to an attractive destination for players to plant their roots and play hockey. Now in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, Panthers GM Bill Zito has built a powerhouse.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
The Athletic ($): Fresh off their Eastern Conference Final elimination, how do the New York Rangers handle their offseason? Who stays, and who goes?
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a bit of a weird spot right now. They don’t have many young and exciting prospects for Sidney Crosby to eventually pass the torch to. In fact, they’re likely to extend him and have already locked up his friends in Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang to long-term deals. Yet, their 2023-24 season was… well, awful. The question becomes, what does a successful Penguins offseason look like?
Boston Hockey Now: The Boston Bruins are one of the most high-profile franchises in all of the National Hockey League. Fans will get a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of two of the team’s biggest stars in an upcoming Amazon docuseries, featuring David Pastrnak and Jeremy Swayman.

San Jose Hockey Now: The San Jose Sharks just became a whole lot more interesting. When the Sharks won the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery, it all but cemented Macklin Celebrini’s future in San Jose. Then, Will Smith signed his entry-level contract, giving the Sharks quite the intriguing 1-2 center duo. Could Sharks GM Mike Greir reel in a big fish like Jake Guentzel to compliment his young stars?
Colorado Hockey Now: Valeri Nichuskin is currently suspended by the NHL for a minimum of six months after being placed in stage three of Player Assistance Program of the NHLPA and NHL. However, he’s keeping in shape and honing his skills overseas this summer, competing in Russia’s Media Hockey League.
NYI Hockey Now: New York Islanders defenseman Robin Salo was supposed to be a steal in the second round when the Isles drafted him back in the 2017 NHL Draft. However, Salo hasn’t quite been able to put it all together at the NHL level and has steadily fallen down the Islanders’ depth chart. According to a report out of Sweden, Salo is returning to his country to play with the Malmö Redhawks in the Swedish Hockey League.
Nashville Hockey Now: Elliotte Friedman made his weekly appearance on 102.5 The Game on the Caroline, Willy, and D-Mase show. Friedman discussed something that has been a hot topic issue for the local market and Nashville Predators fans as well as the overall NHL. What is next for goaltender Juuse Saros?
