Devils Daily: Jacob Markstrom News; Sasha Barkov Update

New Jersey Devils

It seems like New Jersey Devils fans are getting tired of hearing about Jacob Markstrom. Perhaps that’s because they’ve been here once before. Markstrom was quite close to being traded to the Devils, until he wasn’t, which makes this game of chicken between New Jersey’s GM Tom Fitzgerald and Flames GM Craig Conroy tedious to keep up with.

However, where there is smoke, there is fire. At some point, this will all boil over and we’ll learn Markstrom’s fate.

Elsewhere, a Sasha Barkov update, Boston brings back Jay Leach, and Carolina is locking down a fixture on the blueline long term.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Jacob Markstrom seemingly checks all the boxes. He’s an All-Star, former Vezina Trophy nominee, and provides above average goaltending — even last season on a below average Flames team. Yet, when polling the opinion of fans, a Devils trade for Markstrom was seemingly not in favor, at least not one involving the 10th overall selection at the 2024 NHL Draft.

More NJHN: Speaking of Markstrom, an updated look at the situation suggests the former Vezina Trophy nominee could stick around in Calgary. Flames General Manager Craig Conroy believes Calgary is still a contending team and is holding out hope that he can convince Markstrom the same.

Even More: Goaltending isn’t the only need the Devils will have this summer. They’d probably like to upgrade the blueline. And, they’ll need a winger at some point, too. Looking to free agency, here are five free agent wingers the Devils should consider adding this summer.

Florida Hockey Now: The Florida Panthers were cautiously optimistic about the health staus of their captain on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Sasha Barkov was on the ice at practice with the Florida Panthers. Although anyone has yet to say he’s good to go for Game 3, it certainly looks like it’s trending in that direction.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: The Carolina Hurricanes are going through changes, however, they don’t plan on stripping things down to the nuts and bolts. According to a report on Wednesday, newly minted Hurricanes General Manager Eric Tulsky is working on a long-term extension, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Boston Hockey Now: Wednesday afternoon, the Boston Bruins announced Jay Leach, the former coach of the Providence Bruins, would return as assistant coach to Jim Montgomery. Leach left Providence to become an assistant coach with the Seattle Kraken under coach Dave Hakstol. However, Seattle terminated Hakstol and staff after the club’s disappointing third season.

Philly Hockey Now: On March 8th, in an NHL trade deadline deal, the Philadelphia Flyers sent Wade Allison to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Denis Gurianov. While the trade created a fresh opportunity for both players, neither winger truly seized it, and both are expected to be looking for new homes once again in 2024. The Flyers bringing Allison back to Philly makes sense.
