BREAKING: Devils Trade for Goaltender Jacob Markstrom, Deal Kevin Bahl
The Devils deal Kevin Bahl and a top-10 protected first round pick in 2025 for Jacob Markstrom.
The New Jersey Devils found their No.1 goaltender. In a Devils trade with the Calgary Flames, New Jersey has acquired Calgary Flames goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, multiple sources confirm.
The Flames are retaining 31.25% of Markstrom’s salary, a $4.125M cap hit for the new Devils goaltender.
The Flames are acquiring 23-year-old defenseman Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first round pick in the Devils trade. The first round pick in 2025 is top-10 protected.
Bahl’s Devils career ends after skating in 148 games scoring four goals and 25 points. The Devils acquired Bahl from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Taylor Hall.
The now-Devils netminder agreed to waive his no-move clause previous to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. However, the deal fell apart at the finish line and he remained in Calgary for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. The Flames did not qualify for the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Markstrom ended the regular season with a 23-23-2 record, registering a 2.78 GAA and .905 SV%. The Swedish netminder’s best season in net came in 2021-22, receiving his first nomination as an NHL All-Star, accruing a 37-15-9 record, .922 SV% and 2.22 GAA while posting a league-leading nine shutouts.
Markstrom (34) is a 14-year NHL veteran. The Swedish netminder has tended the net for the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, and Flames over his 14-year career. In 485 career games, Markstrom has registered a 215-196-57 record, a career .909 SV% and 2.72 GAA.
Markstrom is expected to be the Devils’ starting goaltender while working in tandem with Jake Allen who has one-year remaining on his contract. General Manager Tom Fitzgerald acquired Allen at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline from the Montreal Canadiens, along with Finnish goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen.
Kahkonen is expected to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
The Devils still hold their 2024 first-round pick, 10th overall. The Devils are still in the trade market and the pick is still in play via a Devils trade.
