You might have had the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames connecting on a trade this offseason. However, you might not have had the Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings making the deal they made yesterday. Wednesday was full of surprises as the offseason officially got underway despite the Stanley Cup having yet to be awarded.

In the links, how the Devils acquired Jacob Markstrom. Plus, the details of the Capitals trade with the Kings.

Elsewhere, Barclay Goodrow is not happy with his now former team. Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon are scheming. Plus, Florida is feeling the heat… no pun intended.

Let’s do that hockey.

Metropolitan Division & Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils finally got their man. It’s been in the works for a while, so when the Devils trade for Jacob Markstrom was announced, it didn’t come as a surprise. But, it’s finally done and the Devils can feel pretty good about their goaltending situation, even after dealing Kevin Bahl in the trade.

More NJHN: Just mere hours after the Devils made a splash acquiring Markstrom, the Washington Capitals made a splash acquiring Pierre-Luc Dubois in exchange for Darcy Kuemper, sending the veteran goaltender to the Los Angeles Kings.

Florida Hockey Now: Once up three games to none in the Stanley Cup Final, the Florida Panthers now hold just a 3-2 series lead over the Edmonton Oilers. Panthers head coach Paul Maurice won’t say it, but the pressure is on the Cats.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

NY Post: Former New York Rangers forward Barclay Goodrow has a 15-team no-trade clause, a clause his agent negotiated with GM Chris Drury. It’s believed Goodrow’s former team, the San Jose Sharks, were on that list. However, Drury got around that by placing the veteran forward on waivers and he was scooped up by Sharks GM Mike Grier. It’s believed the transaction was a pre-arranged deal between the Rangers and Sharks which has left Goodrow quite unhappy.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Sidney Crosby and Nathan Mackinnon will almost certainly be on the Team Canada roster at the 4 Nations Faceoff and 2026 Olympics in Milan. The off-ice BFF’s are already plotting the lines and power play for Team Canada.

San Jose Hockey Now: Goodrow wasn’t the only add for the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday. The Sharks acquired Ty Dellandrea from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a draft pick. With Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini (soon) in the fold, the Sharks are seemingly supporting their young talent with NHL players.

NYI Hockey Now: The New York Islanders have re-signed pending RFA Kyle MacLean to a three-year contract worth $2.35 million dollars over the life of the deal. The AAV is only $775k per season, an extremely reasonable sum for someone who is expected to play a key role in the future for the Islanders.

Calgary Hockey Now: From the Calgary Flames perspective, Kevin Bahl and New Jersey’s 2025 first round pick head north in exchange for Jacob Markstrom.
