Now that the New Jersey Devils have their man between the pipes, it’s time they focus their attention on keeping pucks out of their net by providing support in front of the crease. The Devils need to add a veteran defenseman, perhaps in both the top and bottom four, especially after dealing Kevin Bahl.

In the links, five depth defenseman the Devils should consider adding in free agency this summer.

Elsewhere, New Jersey native Ross Colton is potentially on the trade block. A trade between Ottawa and Philly is seemingly in the works. And, Linus Ullmark seems destined for Ottawa.

In other news, the Los Angeles Kings rebrand reveal has begun.

No one asked for my opinion, but I like it! Eager to see Anaheim’s next.

Anyway, let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils’ goaltending looks quite good with Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen as the tandem heading into the 2024-25 season. In fact, it’s likely the best goaltending presence they’ve had since… Martin Brodeur? Cory Schneider?

More NJHN: Even before acquiring Markstrom, the Devils were going to have to address their depth on the blueline. Now that they’ve traded Kevin Bahl, that need became even more crucial. Here’s five depth defenseman GM Tom Fitzgerald should consider.

Florida Hockey Now: It’s hot in Sunrise, but that’s not why the Florida Panthers are getting burned. Once leading 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final, the Cats find themselves up just 3-2 now after losing in back-to-back games. The Panthers need to figure outthe Edmonton Oilers’ special teams or they risk losing it all.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: According to Rick Dhaliwal of Chek News, Ilya Mikheyev’s agent, Dan Milstein, has been granted permission by the Vancouver Canucks to help facilitate a trade.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed goalie Alex Nedeljkovic to a two-year contract with a $2.5 million average annual value. The move comes as a bit of a surprise considering Tristan Jarry remains and Joel Blomqvist seems all but ready. Regardless, Ned’s staying in Pitt.

Boston Hockey Now: The Boston Bruins began the offseason with a variety of options in their search to trade goaltender Linus Ullmark. But in just one afternoon, those options quickly dissipated after the Devils acquired Markstrom, and the Los Angeles Kings snagged Darcy Kuemper. The Ottawa Senators are seemingly the Bruins’ last hope in a potential Ullmark trade.

Colorado Hockey Now: The Colorado Avalanche are headed into a summer where they’re going to be a bit financially squeezed. For starters, Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichuskin very much remain in question, while players such as Jonathan Drouin and Casey Mittelstadt need new contracts. Therefore, New Jersey native Ross Colton might be on the trade block.

NYI Hockey Now: The New York Islanders are in a salary cap predicament. Their captain, Anders Lee, is making $7 million a year, however, his goal scoring touch, speed, and ice time are all dissipating. It begs the question, do the Isles trade, buyout, or keep the captain?

Philly Hockey Now: According to a report from TSN’s Travis Yost, the Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators have put together the framework for a trade, though the deal might not be finalized up until or during the 2024 NHL Draft.
