BREAKING: Devils Draft Mikhail Yegorov with 49th Overall Pick
The New Jersey Devils select North America’s No.1 ranked prospect goaltender, Mikhail Yegorov, with the pick they received for John Marino.
The New Jersey Devils made a big move to start day two of the NHL draft, trading John Marino for a pair of second round picks – including the 49th overall pick. With that selection, they took Russian goalie, Mikhail Yegorov from the Omaha Lancers of the USHL.
Like their first round pick, Anton Silayev, Yegorov is a gigantic player, standing at 6-foot-5. Yegorov put up a 3.86 GAA and a 0.892 SV% this past season with Omaha.
According to Corey Pronman via The Athletic, “Yegorov came over from the CSKA program to the USHL this season… Yegorov has clear pro potential. He’s nearly 6-foot-5 and moves quite well in the net. I wouldn’t call his side-to-side movements explosive, but he can make tough saves and is nimble for a guy his size. On his best nights, where he’s squaring up pucks, and given the type of stops he can make, he looks like a clear NHL goalie. Too often that doesn’t happen, though. Yegorov can struggle with his reads and decisions, challenging at the wrong time or struggling to pick up where the puck is going. He projects as a backup goalie in the NHL but he has a chance to become a starter if he really hits.”
Despite the acquisition of Jacob Markstrom, the Devils are still searching for their long-term answer in net.
Yegorov was the top-rated North American goalie according to NHL Central Scouting final rankings. He’s slated to play college hockey under former Devil, Jay Pandolfo, at Boston University.
The Devils add Mikhail Yegorov to a group of young goalies that includes Akira Schmid, Nico Daws, Jakub Malek, Isaac Poulter, and Tyler Brennan.
