New Jersey Devils prospect defenseman, Daniel Karpovich, is continuing his development overseas in 2024-25.

According to BelarusHockey.com, Karpovich is signing a one-year deal with Avtomobilist of the KHL. Although Karpovich’s contract is with the varsity club, the Devils prospect defenseman will report to the All-Russian Hockey League (VHL) to play with Gornyak, which is the second-highest level of competition in Russia.

Last season, Karpovich signed a one-year contract with Neman Grodno of the Belarusian Extraleague – Belarus’ top hockey league. In 49 games, the two-way defenseman who is described as having a “heavy shot” potted two goals and 11 points with Neman Grodno. In the postseason, the Devils prospect defenseman registered an assist and four penalty minutes in six games.

The Devils drafted Karpovich in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, 186th overall. Leading up to his draft year, Karpovich had a strong season in the MHL — Russia’s junior hockey league — with Avto Yekaterinburg — registering 10 goals and 35 points in 47 games. He also served as the team’s alternate captain.

The 19-year-old defenseman from Minsk just left Newark, New Jersey after he attended the Devils’ development camp, his second camp in as many summers.

Karpovich’s 2023-24 club made it to the Belarusian playoffs with a 30-3-6-16 record, however, were bounced in the first round.

The Devils prospect defenseman isn’t just a two-way defenseman with a heavy shot, but he’s also known to have an element of physicality in his tool belt. Karpovich is joined by some heavy hitters out of the Devils’ 2024 draft class, including 10th overall selection Anton Silayev, Kasper Pikkarainen, and Herman Traff.

With the changes between the KHL and FHR starting as soon as next season, there should be little to no concern about Karpovich and his rights with the Devils.

After admitting he could have had a better season in 2023-24, Karpovich is a candidate to have a big season in 2024-25.
