There is certainly a lot to unpack in today’s daily. Starting with the state of the New Jersey Devils. In case you missed yesterday’s article, check it out in the links below. The projected lineup for next season is certainly exciting to look over when you see it on paper.

But how about the possibility that both Rutger McGroarty and Yaroslav Askarov are fits for the Devils? Could Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald make one, or both work? McGroarty would bring that elbow grease that will always be desired, while Askarov could be the long-term plan in goal while Jacob Markstrom tends the twine for the next two seasons.

Elsewhere, don’t get too excited at the idea of Jacob Trouba playing elsewhere next season, Pavelski’s former team tried to bring him back before hanging up the skates, and it sounds like trade talks for Patrik Laine have been put on pause.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: In a new series highlighting the state of the NHL, specifically the Metropolitan Division, the Devils got an offseason makeover with a focus on defense and goaltending. Plus, projected lines, key arrivals/departures, needs, and more.

The Athletic ($): Now that we’re out of the flat cap era, some contracts around the NHL look better and better as the days go on. Here are the 10 best contracts of 2024, including one Devils forward who is on quite the bargain deal.

Sportsnet: Both Rutger McGroarty and Yaroslav Askarov could find themselves playing in new organizations next season. And yes, the Devils are a fit for both players.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: The St. Louis Blue could be without Torey Krug for a while — potentially all of 2024-25 — as it was revealed he has been diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle.

TSN: It appears the Columbus Blue Jackets are holding off on Patrik Laine trade talks until after he exits the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

The Athletic ($): There are still moving parts with the New York Rangers, who have some restricted free agents to extend and are still in the trade market. However, the Rangers won’t be rid of their captain yet, as Jacob Trouba is likely to return.

San Jose Hockey Now: Dallas Stars forward, Joe Pavelski, announced on Tuesday he’s hanging up his skates, retiring after an 18-year NHL career. Before he made the decision to do that, however, San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier attempted to bring Pavelski back to California for at least one more season to aid in the mentoring of 2024 No.1 overall selection, Macklin Celebrini.

Colorado Hockey Now: The Colorado Avalanche have quite a few balls in the air. What’s their captain’s status? Will Valeri Nichuskin be back? For the most part, it’s forced the Avs to go relatively unchanged. Similar to the Devils, projected lines, key arrivals/departures, needs, and more.

NYI Hockey Now: The New York Islanders have signed Simon Holmstrom to a one-year contract extension. He took $850k on a one-year, one-way deal instead of his qualifying offer of $874k but a two-way deal. Now, Holmstrom is no longer waiver-exempt, ensuring his spot on the roster.

Philly Hockey Now: According to a report, Alexei Kolosov, the Philadelphia Flyers’ top goalie prospect, bailed on the team and slept through his flight instead of showing up to development camp earlier in the month as originally planned.

Detroit Hockey Now: Depth is a popular talking point among NHL teams, and the Detroit Red Wings are no different. However, when the Red Wings discuss the depth of their roster, it isn’t merely talk. It’s a fact of life that should prove beneficial to the club over the course of the 2024-25 NHL season.

Montreal Hockey Now: The Montreal Canadiens did not waste much time when it came to replacing the head coach of their AHL affiliate. There were several quality options available, but in the end, the team hired former NHL head coach Pascal Vincent to lead the charge for the Laval Rocket.
