Rising Devils Prospect Forward Inks Entry-Level Contract
Cam Squires met the record for most points (11) in a single playoff series in Cape Breton franchise history last spring.
The New Jersey Devils announced on Friday that they’ve signed Devils prospect forward Cam Squires to a three-year, entry-level contract. The contract has an $867.5K cap hit & $925K AAV.
Squires will report to Devils training camp in September but has another year left to play with the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Eagles.
The Devils drafted Squires in the fourth-round of the 2023 NHL Draft, 122nd overall. Standing at 6-foot, 170 lbs, the 19-year-old forward just wrapped up his third season with the Eagles.
Squires led the Eagles in both goals (33) and points (72), with the next leading point collector (Oliver House) accruing 61 points.
In the playoffs, Squires met the record for most points (11) in a single playoff series in Cape Breton franchise history last spring. In 20 QMJHL playoff games, the Devils prospect forward scored nine goals and 20 points in 14 games.
Recognizing the leap Squires took last season, he attributed the growth to his offseason training.
“Yeah, I think it was just coming ready to play at the right time,” Squires explained to New Jersey Hockey Now. “I think just building all year, like I said the prospects tournament that really kind of set the tone. And I don’t think it was jumping up a level but just kind of sinking down to where you where you train on all year. Where you bring your level — your compete — is huge. I think playoff time is the most fun time of year and it’s pretty good to see the best players be the best players. For us. Our team went on a good run. It was exciting. And yeah, it was fun to play.”
According to the press release, “His 72 points ranked sixth in the QMJHL this season, while his plus/minus rating (+15) was tied for third overall. The right-handed shot has totaled 170 career points (79g-91a) and 117 penalty minutes in 197 regular-season games with the Eagles.”
For a pool of prospects who lacks forward talent, Squires jumps to the top of the Devils’ forward prospects, perhaps just behind Arseni Gritsyuk, but ahead of names such as Dylan Wendt and Josh Filmon.
