The New Jersey Devils have already begun to hand out invites for September ahead of the 2024-25 regular season. A team source confirms to New Jersey Hockey Now that 6-foot-5, 206 lb defenseman, Igor Mburanumwe, was invited to training camp in this fall. Rookies will report on Sept. 11th.

Mburanumwe was drafted 95th overall in the sixth round of the 2020 QMJHL Entry Draft by the Victoriaville Tigres. He was traded to the Acadie-Bathhurst Titan at the start of the 2023-24 season. In 188 QMJHL games, Mburanumwe potted nine goals and 38 points. The Chambly, Quebec, Canada native had a career year in his 20-year-old season skating with the Titan, potting seven goals, 13 assists, and 20 points, career highs in each category. It’s also worth noting he was a plus-20 on the season. Mburanumwe wore an ‘A’ for the Titan last season and was described as a vocal leader in the locker room.

In the 2020-21 season, Mburanumwe captured the QMJHL championship with the Tigres.

The Devils invited prospect defenseman is committed to the University of McGill in the USports League — which is Canada’s version of the NCAA — next season.

Mburanumwe’s game is described as a defensive defenseman that stabilizes the blue line. Despite his offensive breakout last season, he’s a big bodied defender who is unafraid to be physical.

The Devils inviting the 6-foot-5, 206 lb defenseman aligns with what they did at the NHL Draft, accruing a plethora of big-bodied, 200-plus lb skaters who have upside on the ice. Such names include Anton Silayev and Kasper Pikkarainen who were both selected in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Mburanumwe explains a player who he looked up to for inspiration for his hockey career is former Devils defenseman P.K. Subban.
