Devils Prospects
Devils Top Prospects for Prospect Challenge Revealed
The Devils will deploy some of their top prospects and at least one training camp invite to the rookie tournament in Buffalo.
The Devils will once again be returning to the annual prospect challenge this September at Buffalo’s LECOM Harborcenter. The rookie tournament, which takes place Friday, Sept. 13 to Monday, Sept 16., will feature the Devils, as well as the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, and newcomers the Columbus Blue Jackets.
This marks the first time since development camp that we’ll see Devils prospects in action, and the first time against other competition. The Devils have yet to announce the full roster but have revealed the top prospects who will be participating.
Headlining the group will be 2022 second-round pick, defenseman Seamus Casey. Joining him will be Utica defensemen Topias Vilen and Mikael Diotte. Also, New Jersey Hockey Now understands undrafted defenseman Igor Mburanumwe, who was invited out of McGill University, will be joining the team for rookie camp and the prospect challenge, although this has yet to be confirmed.
Four of the Devils high-end forward prospects will also be joining the team in Buffalo, three of which were in attendance last year. Former first-round pick Chase Stillman, recent signee Cam Squires, and goal-scoring winger Josh Filmon will join newcomer Dylan Wendt.
This will be the first chance these players have to impress the coaching staff ahead of training camp. The Devils prospect pool isn’t as deep or filled with the elite talent it once was a few years back. However, there are players with NHL upside that, and with a good tournament, can have a leg up on the competition for depth spots. Prospects such as Fabian Zetterlund, Nikita Okhotiuk, Kevin Bahl, and Nico Daws put on great performances in past years, which helped them reach the NHL.
The Devils will open up against Ottawa on Friday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 pm. Followed by games against host team Buffalo the following night at 7 pm, before wrapping up against Boston on Monday at 10 am.
