Devils Daily: Goaltender Succession Plan; Sabres Left Short-Handed; Laine-Penguins Trade Scenario

The dominoes are falling, slowly but surely, for the New Jersey Devils as they chip away at their restricted free agents remaining this summer. Nico Daws was the latest to put pen to paper, however, it wasn’t your average contract. The Devils seemingly laid out their future plans in net on Tuesday.
Perhaps, one of the two goaltenders who are in the Devils prospect rankings below will work in tandem with Daws in the future.
Elsewhere, Buffalo is left shorthanded after conflicting reports regarding Martin Necas’ future; potential Patrik Laine trade to Pittsburgh; and a couple of blue liners ink new deals.
Let’s do that hockey.
Devils News
New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils announced on Tuesday morning that they’ve re-signed prospect goaltender Nico Daws to a two-year contract. Here’s why said contract revealed the succession plan in goal and New Jersey’s confidence in Daws.
More NJHN: Speaking of goaltenders, the latest Devils prospect rankings on NJHN dropped on Tuesday. Within the five prospects ranked between 10 & six, there could be a couple of future NHL goaltenders.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
NHL.com: Eric Staal announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday. He signed a one-day contract with the Carolina Hurricanes to retire where he played for 12 seasons and the organization announced they’ll retired his No.12.
Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers and Ryan Lindgren avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract for the 2024-25 season.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins have an open spot for a winger in the top six. Not only does the lineup have an open spot, but it also needs more goals. That’s why a Patrik Laine trade, no matter how improbable, should be on the table.
Montreal Hockey Now: A quiet summer gave way to some rare news on Tuesday, as the Montreal Canadiens signed defenceman Arber Xhekaj to a two-year contract extension that carries a $2.6 million price tag, which means his deal’s annual average value (AAV) is $1.3 million.
Buffalo Hockey Now: Martin Necas was a restricted free agent with the Carolina Hurricanes and was suspected of wanting a bigger opportunity elsewhere. The Buffalo Sabres were an obvious potential destination, but conflicting reports and information debate how far the trade talks went between the two clubs.
