The New Jersey Devils aren’t making the same gamble with Paul Cotter that the Vegas Golden Knights are making with Alexander Holtz and Akira Schmid. At the very least, the Devils are getting a workhorse forward who will make life very difficult for the opposition. However, general manager Tom Fitzgerald believes Cotter has another level to his game. There is some evidence to support that thinking as well.

More on that in the links.

Elsewhere, the Isles fall further out of favor despite a decently significant add or two this summer. Interesting stats/trends in Pittsburgh last season. And a busy summer in 2025 for the Devils No.1 rivals.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: Yes, it’s true that it might have cost the Devils Alexander Holtz and Akira Schmid. However, general manager Tom Fitzgerald knew the Devils needed someone like Paul Cotter. In fact, he revealed he thinks there’s even more to the former Vegas Golden Knights bruiser.

NYPost+ ($): It turned out to be a quiet offseason for Devils division rival, the New York Rangers. However, there’s a decent list of reasons why next summer won’t be as quiet.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Advanced stats can be as tedious as sitting in traffic or as misleading as political Tweets. Yet, picking through the latest, there are some interesting Pittsburgh Penguins stats nuggets to chew on that may confirm a few of your criticisms.

Boston Hockey Now: It was early on last summer that James van Riemsdyk and Kevin Shattenkirk signed one-year contracts with the Boston Bruins as free agents. But despite both having played serviceable hockey for the Bruins, it appears neither will be returning to Boston this upcoming season after the organization chose to spend money elsewhere this time around.

Colorado Hockey Now: Lonzo Ball, the NBA star who had the same cartilage transplant surgery that the Colorado forward had, is back scrimmaging. Does that leave hope for Colorado Avalanche fans about captain Gabriel Landeskog?

NYI Hockey Now: The largely unchanged New York Islanders team has fallen far out of favor with the sportsbook bettors next season. However, the summer isn’t over. Could general manager Lou Lamoriello give them a reason to change their minds?

Montreal Hockey Now: If the Habs are going to finally take the next step in 2024-25, they need these three key Montreal Canadiens to stay healthy.
