August is typically a slow news month in the NHL, until it isn’t. On Tuesday, the St. Louis Blues woke up hockey fans everywhere, making a splash in the restricted free agent market. Don’t worry, it didn’t involve New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer.

However, we took a look at what that could look like in the links below.

Elsewhere, it was an active day for the Blues who took part in a trade. That was just the quick note for St. Louis on Tuesday, however. They were involved in some much deeper negotiations explained below.

Plus, the Tampa Bay Lightning are suddenly for sale, and the Isles are searching for a new identity.

Let’s do that hockey.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

The Athletic ($): The St. Louis Blues extended offer sheets to Edmonton Oilers youngsters Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg on Tuesday. What left the 2023-24 runner-ups susceptible to the potential loss in personnel?

Sportsnet: According to Elliotte Friedman’s sources, the Tampa Bay Lightning have begun a multi-stage sale process that will value the team at close to $2B (US).

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Before the Blues could extend the offer sheets they did to Holloway and Broberg, they needed to recoup their second round pick in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Nashville Hockey Now: The Penguins weren’t quite done making trades on Tuesday, acquiring Cody Glass from the Nashville Predators.

Boston Hockey Now: The Boston Bruins have a pretty intriguing restricted free agent in Jeremy Swayman who remains unsigned as well. However, the B’s still remain without risk of losing their No.1 goaltender to an offer sheet despite the signs of life on the RFA market.

NYI Hockey Now: The New York Islanders are moving on from two-thirds of the “Identity Line” which has lived on their fourth line since the early 2010’s. So, what’s their identity now?

Montreal Hockey Now: Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has the means to exploit a team with an offer sheet the very same way the Blues did with the Oilers.
