We’ve eclipsed the halfway point of August. That means hockey is right around the corner. Some general managers have even gotten back to work with trades, offer sheets, and professional tryouts recently. We discussed who the New Jersey Devils should consider inviting to training camp this September.

Elsewhere, it’s a Sidney Crosby lockdown, Philly’s depth chart, and young talent who could be at the 4 Nations Faceoff.

New Jersey Hockey Now: It’s PTO season! That means teams are beginning to dole out invites to unrestricted free agents to attend their training camps with the possibility to earn a contract. Here are three candidates the Devils should invite who are still on the market.

If you’re wondering why a guy like James van Riemsdyk isn’t one of the three candidates, there’s base. For starters, if the Devils wanted JVR, they would have already signed him. Instead, they opted for Tomas Tatar. Additionally, the Devils are a team who primarily succeed on the rush by utilizing their speed. van Riemsdyk doesn’t fit the mold.

Don’t get me wrong, JVR is a fine player. He just doesn’t mesh with the Devils makeup.

Think Tyler Toffoli, but not as good at putting the puck in the net. See the issue?
