‘Tis the season. Hockey is officially back. Across the NHL, rookie training camps have gotten underway. It’s a time when rookie camp rosters are revealed and a few surprises are sprinkled in here and there. On Thursday, it was revealed that a former New Jersey Devils goaltender — who is not a rookie — is skating at the New York Islanders rookie camp.

The Islanders are deploying three goaltenders at their rookie camp, two of their own in Tristan Lennox and Henrik Tikkanen. However, joining that group is former Devils goaltender, Keith Kinkaid, who spent 11 seasons in the Devils’ organization between the NHL and AHL club.

Last season, the Devils inked Kinkaid to a one-year, two-way contract. However, he never saw time in the NHL despite the struggles between Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid. Kinkaid had an additional AHL contract with the then independent Chicago Wolves.

In 24 games with Chicago, Kinkaid accrued a 3.54 goals against average and .880 SV%.

Kinkaid is an undrafted goaltender who signed on with the Devils in April 2011 after two successful seasons at Union College. In six seasons playing in New Jersey, Kinkaid accrued a 132-64-55 record with a .906 SV% and 2.90 GAA.

After leaving the Devils following the 2018-19 season, Kinkaid played in the NHL for Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, and Colorado Avalanche.

Kinkaid is a resident of Long Island, growing up in Farmingville, New York, and attended Union College located in Schenectady.

It’s unclear whether or not the 35-year-old goaltender is attempting to win a job in the Islanders’ organization specifically. However, Kinkaid explained to Isles media that he has, “a lot left in the tank.” Therefore, one can deduce Kinkaid is seeking a pro contract for 2024-25.

Currently, they have Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov slated as their goaltenders in the NHL while Lennox, Tikkanen, Marcus Hogberg, and Jakub Skarek tend the net across the minor league affiliates.
