NEWARK — And exhale. With the first group of players on the New Jersey Devils’ ice on Thursday morning, sophomore defenseman, Simon Nemec was on the ice.

The Devils defenseman put a bit of a scare in the Devils’ fan base, taking an ugly spill a few weeks ago while participating in an Olympic qualifier game for Team Slovakia.

Nemec fell to the ice while tangled up in a puck battle with a Team Kazakhstan offender, and awkwardly hit the boards below the goal line. Nemec was promptly removed from the game and the following matchup, which ultimately saw Slovakia qualify for the 2026 Olympics.

After undergoing examinations with Slovak doctors, it was revealed that Simon Nemec had not broken or dislocated, what was classified as an “upper-body” injury.

New Jersey Hockey now learned that although Nemec is on the ice Thursday morning to participate in the opening of on-ice activities in training camp, the 20-year-old defenseman’s status will continue to be monitored as training camp ensues.

Regardless, it’s certainly good news for the Devils, who have already lost fellow sophomore defenseman, Luke Hughes, until early November.

Not to mention, the Devils are still without forward Dawson Mercer, who remains a restricted free agent in need of a new contract.

Nemec had an excellent showing in his rookie season, skating in 60 games in place of an injured Dougie Hamilton. In that span, Nemec accrued three goals and 19 points, while also displaying NHL caliber puck-moving abilities and adequate defending abilities in the Devils’ end of the ice.

In the Calder voting race, the Devils rookie defenseman finished 14th, while Luke Hughes finished in third.
