Devils Daily: Erik Haula’s Absence; Returning Devil Beams; Foiled Rangers Trade
The New Jersey Devils have been on the ice for three days now and Erik Haula has missed each day. The Devils explained that the veteran forward is dealing with an illness.
Of course, we wish him a speedy recovery. It’s always difficult for a player to find their footing when they start their season later than everyone else.
The Devils won’t have a morning skate today before they face off with the New York Islanders in their first preseason matchup. Because he missed so much time already, it’s unlikely Haula dresses tonight, either. He’ll have some catching up to do, hopefully as soon as Monday.
In the links, a returning Devil can’t contain his excitement, plus yesterday’s notebook amid Dawson Mercer’s return.
Elsewhere, the Blueshirts captain addresses the New York Rangers trade rumors, Yaroslav Askarov speaks, Pittsburgh makes cuts, and more.
Let’s do that hockey.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
The Athletic ($): At one point this summer, it felt like things were going in the direction that Jacob Trouba would be involved in a New York Rangers trade. However, it ultimately didn’t happen. The Blueshirts captain addressed the trade rumors.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Things happen fast in the condensed amount of time teams have in training camp. On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins have already made their first round of cuts.
San Jose Hockey Now: Newly acquired San Jose Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov cracks open a little bit on what happened with the Nashville Predators that made him request to be traded.
Philly Hockey Now: Here’s an interesting development. Jay Woodcroft — who was a candidate for the Devils job before Sheldon Keefe became available — is attending the Philadelphia Flyers’ training camp. The former Edmonton Oilers head coach is trying to get better by observing John Tortorella.
