Devils vs. Islanders: Lineup Decisions, Notes, How to Watch, & More
The New Jersey Devils host the New York Islanders in their first preseason game. Lineup decisions, notes, how to watch, & more.
The New Jersey Devils will play an actual hockey game today. The Devils begin their preseason by hosting the New York Islanders at the Prudential Center Sunday evening. We know that the Devils plan to ice as close to their regular roster as possible, however, we’ve already been informed of who won’t play.
The notable players who head coach Sheldon Keefe mentioned on Saturday that are unlikely to play include Jack Hughes, Timo Meier, Simon Nemec, and Dawson Mercer. The first three are “perfectly fine” according to the Devils’ head coach. Keefe cited liking the idea of giving Hughes, Meier, and Nemec extra time to recover from their respective offseason injuries.
On Mercer, he still has some catching up to do after missing the first two days of training camp.
Obviously, Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce are sidelined with injuries they’re still recovering from. They won’t be playing tonight, or in the near future.
As for Erik Haula, he remains ill.
In goal, expect to see Jacob Markstrom tend the twine for the first time at the Prudential Center as a member of the Devils. With such little time before they leave for Prague, Keefe is going to want to play as many of his regulars as he can.
For the Islanders, it’s their first chance to debut their new first line featuring Bo Horvat, Mathew Barzal, and newcomer Anthony Duclair.
Ilya Sorokin remains sidelined following back surgery e received this summer. Isles head coach Patrick Roy has Semyon Varlamov and Marcus Hogberg to turn to in goal.
*Editors note: The Devils won’t hold a morning skate. With core players not expected to dress, this edition won’t provide a projected lineup.
