It will be interesting to see who Sheldon Keefe deploys tonight on Long Island. The New Jersey Devils’ head coach explained that he plans to ice his full roster in the last game before the varsity squad goes wheels up en route to Prague. With injuries holding a number of players out on the blue line, whoever skates in the presumed Brett Pesce and Luke Hughes spots will almost certainly be named to the final 26-man roster.

In the links, it’s almost expected that one of the Devils top prospects takes on of those spots, despite being right-handed. Plus, six random thoughts since training camp opened.

Elsewhere, a surprise plot twist with Philly and their disgruntled goaltender, Kyle Okposo’s successor in Buffalo has been named, and Pittsburgh’s top defenseman receives status update.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils certainly have a few voids on the blue line due to the unfortunate reality that they’re already dealing with injuries. However, Seamus Casey has suddenly emerged as a candidate for the opening night roster, and not just because of the process of elimination.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Initial reports on the Los Angeles Kings No.1 defenseman aren’t good. Although he’s getting a second opinion, Drew Doughty has been diagnosed with a left-ankle fracture.

Buffalo Hockey Now: The Buffalo Sabres announced Thursday that defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is the team’s new captain. He was the favorite to assume the captaincy since the Sabres traded former captain Kyle Okposo at the trade deadline.

Boston Hockey Now: It feels like Nikita Zadorov is meant to wear the spoked ‘B.’ Now playing for the Boston Bruins, the 29-year-old defenseman is showing off his animal instincts.

Philly Hockey Now: In a surprising plot twist, multiple reports and from the words of agent Dan Milstein, top Philadelphia Flyers goalie prospect Alexei Kolosov is suddenly returning to North America to participate in training camp and the NHL preseason.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Erik Karlsson was injured just before training camp began. At first, coach Mike Sullivan indicated Karlsson’s absence was mostly a precaution. On Thursday, Sullivan provided an update on the health status of the Swedish defenseman.
