The Jr. New Jersey Devils and B-squad New York Rangers played a much more exciting preseason game than anyone perhaps anticipated. It might have just been an exhibition, but it certainly had all the elements of a rivalry game. It was fast-paced, physical, fights ensued, was close in score, and even featured a legendary name in net.

Jeremy Brodeur was fantastic in net for the Devils which certainly fostered a special moment. More on Brodeur and the Devils over the Rangers in the links below.

Elsewhere, we have a gloves off negotiation between Boston and their franchise goaltender. In fact, this somewhat feels like it could lead to an unexpected outcome, perhaps a Bruins trade? Plus, have the Blueshirts finally completed their Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider line? And the kids ’round the league are making a preseason impact. Can they secure roster spots on their respective teams?

Let’s do that hockey.

The Athletic ($): So, this could be a problem for the Devils. Reilly Smith just didn’t work out in Pittsburgh. However, that’s not necessarily because he’s lost his touch. Now with the New York Rangers, he could be the piece to finally round out their first line.

Boston Hockey Now: The big news of the day was dropped by Boston Bruins President of Hockey Operations, Cam Neely. Still at odds with franchise goaltender, Jeremy Swayman, Neely say’s the 23-year-old has, “$64 million reasons” to sign a contract and report to the Bruins.

Bruins fans are hoping this whole Swayman ordeal isn’t an all-time fumble. However, Swayman’s agent, Lewis Gross, responded to Neely’s comments. Gloves are off, kids.

Sportsnet: As a result of this mess, could this all end in Swayman’s departure from Boston in a Bruins trade?

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Much like the Devils, the Pittsburgh Penguins have had some tough preseason injuries to deal with themselves. On Monday, we received an update on a key injury to defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Colorado Hockey Now: Some of the new guys — specifically the youth — have been impressive in training camp this year. For the Colorado Avalanche, it’s been Sam Malinski.

San Jose Hockey Now: Quentin Musty was a candidate to earn a spot on the San Jose Sharks’ made over roster this season. Yet, he was reassigned to the American Hockey League affiliate. What does the former first-round draft selection need to improve?

Florida Hockey Now: Who would’ve thunk just five years ago we’d see a shift in power in Florida? That’s exactly what’s happened between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning.
