And we’re off! The 2024-25 NHL season kicked off yesterday in Prague, Czechia. The New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres played the first game of a back-to-back in the NHL Global Series.

Elsewhere, the San Jose Sharks sent down their elite new goalie prospect to the AHL, a surprise 2024 first-round pick makes the Philadelphia Flyers opening night roster, and a Detroit Red Wings goalie enters the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils started their season strong, beating the Sabres in their opening game 4-1. Newcomers Jacob Markstrom, Johnathan Kovacevic, and Stefan Noesen made their impacts felt.

More NJHN: Before yesterday’s game, the Devils announce their third – and biggest – roster cuts.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

San Jose Hockey Now: After all the drama in Nashville, it seems as though goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov has still found himself starting the season in the AHL. The Sharks paid a hefty price to bring in the 2020 11th overall pick, but regardless, they will let him continue his development in the AHL.

The Sharks will enter the season with former Devils goalies Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek in the crease.

Philadelphia Hockey Now: A bit of a surprise in the City of Brotherly Love, as 2024 first-round pick Jett Luchanko has (for now) made their opening night roster. It’s uncommon for non-top three picks to make the jump straight to the NHL, but Luchanko is a rare occurrence. Time will soon tell if he has what it takes to stick around for a full season of John Tortorella hockey.

The Athletic: Former Edmonton Oiler and current Detroit Red Wings goalie Jack Campbell has entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and will be away from the club indefinitely. The reason as to why he’s entered remains disclosed, and Campbell can rejoin the team upon approval from program administrators.
