Devils Daily: Ex-Devils Goaltender Claimed on Waivers; NHL Trade Speculation
It might have been an off day for travel purposes on Friday, but there was still plenty to talk about. The New Jersey Devils are off to a solid start to the 2024-25 season. They’re 2-1-0 and although last game was a disappointing loss, there’s little reason to panic yet.
Still, we evaluated the standout performances — both good and bad — in the first edition of Devils Report Card. Plus, a closer look at Simon Nemec’s struggles for the first three games. More in the links below.
Elsewhere, an ex-Devils goaltender is claimed on waivers, NHL Trade speculation, a couple of notable injuries.
Let’s do that hockey.
Devils News
New Jersey Hockey Now: Following the Devils’ 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, we had some thoughts. Here’s the first edition of Devils Report Card, featuring a lackluster Jack Hughes and superb penalty kill, among other things.
More NJHN: Although the Devils are off to a respectable 2-1-0 record, it hasn’t all been sunshine and roses. Sophomore defenseman Simon Nemec hasn’t been looking like himself. Is there cause for concern, or is it too early?

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
theScore: It appears the Toronto Maple Leafs could be working on some sort of NHL trade. Defenseman Timothy Liljegren hasn’t played for Toronto two nights in a row now, and the 25-year-old could want a fresh start elsewhere.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Rookie goalie Joel Blomqvist showed his best self, rather than the rookie who was twice torched in the preseason. It begs the question, where does Tristan Jarry fit in with the Pittsburgh Penguins?
San Jose Hockey Now: It was an electric NHL debut for Macklin Celebrini with the San Jose Sharks. However, his status for game two of the regular season is in question after seemingly becoming injured.
Colorado Hockey Now: Humble brag, but I freakin’ called it! The Colorado Avalanche were in desperate need for a goaltender. After ex-Devils goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen hit waivers on Thursday via the Winnipeg Jets, the Avs swooped in and snagged him.
If I'm the Avs, I'm undoubtedly claiming Kaapo Kahkonen. https://t.co/BhsfwdH4T3

Florida Hockey Now: It could have been worse, but the Florida Panthers will be without captain Sasha Barkov for a little bit due to injury. What can they do next?
Washington Hockey Now: As part of the celebration for the Washington Capitals‘ 50th season, they’re hosting an alumni game. On Friday, their roster was revealed, and it’s a who’s who of former Capitals.
