NEWARK — The New Jersey Devils did exactly what they should have done against the Utah Hockey Club Monday afternoon. Although they’re young and exciting, the former Arizona Coyotes are also still an inexperienced club. En route to a Devils 3-0 win, goaltender Jake Allen set a new NHL record while helping New Jersey claim two points.

There were many firsts for Utah including their first loss and being handed their first shutout.

Yet, perhaps the most impressive milestone accomplished on Monday was just how many teams Allen has defeated in his career when he secured the shutout victory over Clayton Keller and Co.

Allen’s 409th career victory also secured an NHL record when he defeated the 33rd team in his career, the first goaltender in NHL history to secure a win over 33 NHL franchises.

When asked about the accomplishment and his thoughts on the shutout, Allen explained, at this point in his career, that sort of thing isn’t on his mind.

“I’m past that point, Allen said. “The win is the important part. The shutout is a bonus for me at this point in my career.”

There’s a reason why general manager Tom Fitzgerald traded for and opted to keep Allen over fellow acquired goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. Allen’s reputation precedes itself as one of the more reliable goaltenders no matter if he’s starting, working in a tandem, or backing up.

Secure a win over now 33 NHL franchises certainly proves that point, and the fact that Fitzgerald is rostering the veteran goaltender at pennies on the dollar is some impressive work.

The Devils goaltending is in the best shape it’s been in a long time with Jacob Markstrom and Allen.
