NEWARK —Â Some necessary reinforcements are seemingly on the brink with the New Jersey Devils. Following their 8-5 butt kicking by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, the Devils hit the ice for morning skate at noon on Wednesday. Head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an encouraging update on the status of injured defensemen Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce.

According to the Devils’ head coach, Hughes and Pesce will travel to Detroit when the Devils face the Red Wings Thursday evening.
Each defensemen’s status for the game against Detroit is undetermined, but the fact that they’re traveling means they’re at least options to be in the lineup for the first time this season.
On Wednesday, Hughes and Pesce practiced as the extra fourth pair on the blue line yet again, while rookie Daniil Misyul remained on the third pair next to Simon Nemec.
Regardless of whether Hughes and Pesce play on Thursday or not, the fact that they’re traveling means they’re more than likely to be in the lineup by the weekend. Perhaps as soon as Friday when the Devils host the New York Islanders.
New Jersey has weathered the absences of their two top-four defensemen, playing their way to a 5-3-1 record through nine games so far this season.
They got a little bit of help from rookie defenseman Seamus Casey who certainly held his own in his first taste of the NHL. However, he was ultimately reassigned to the American Hockey League where he’s expected to play on the Utica Comets’ top pair.
