The New Jersey Devils had a December to remember to send out 2024. That was large in part due to the efforts in goal by Jacob Markstrom.

The NHL named Jacob Markstrom the league’s third star of the month.

Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan Mackinnon and Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl were named first and second starts respectively.

The Devils accrued an 8-4-1 record in the final month of 2024. Markstrom collected all eight wins for the Devils, taking one regulation and one overtime loss.

His only regulation loss came on the last day of the month while visiting the Anaheim Ducks.

Jake Allen suffered all four losses in December.

As a result of the strong month by Markstrom, the Devils sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference.

Markstrom’s 1.30 goals-against average, a .937 save percentage, and two shutouts in the last 10 starts have strengthened his season totals to a 2.15 GAA and .912 SV%. His two shutouts came in back-to-back home efforts in which the Devils only allowed 12 shots on goal against Metropolitan Division Rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.

Markstrom accrued two victories against the Rangers in December, the first on Dec. 2nd in a 5-1 victory at Madison Square Garden making 38 saves on 39 shots. His 12-save shutout came at home on Dec. 23rd.

The Devils goaltender, thus far, has collected a 19-7-2 record in 2024-25. The Swedish netminders 19 wins are second only to Connor Hellebuyck, who ranks first in the NHL with 24 wins.

After starting the season in the negatives, Markstrom’s 11.0 goals saved above expected rank sixth overall, according to MoneyPuck.
