According to a new report, the New Jersey Devils have entered the J.T. Miller NHL trade sweepstakes.

Pierre LeBrun of TSN explains that the Vancouver Canucks have changed their tune in terms of what kind of return they’re looking for. Before, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin was only interested in acquiring assets to help Vancouver now.

However, they’ve begun to accept the idea of futures, which has the Devils now in the market, among other teams.

“The New Jersey Devils, the [New York] Rangers rivals. They’ve also been a late entrant in this, and they’ve held talks with the Canucks on J.T. Miller,” LeBrun explained on the latest TSN Insider Trading. “I also think that internally, the Devils are trying to sort of suss out if it makes sense to go all in on this or not at this point and where they are.”

LeBrun continued, “One thing the Canucks have sort of changed our tune on, when this started six, seven weeks ago, in talks on J.T. Miller, the Canucks said, ‘We need apples for apples. We’re trying to make the playoffs here. We don’t want to do a futures deal.’ The Canucks have relented a bit on that. They would do a futures deal when it comes to making a deal with a contender like a Carolina or a New Jersey, because they understand those teams don’t want to trade away from their core. So still, to play out here, but the Canucks are telling teams, ‘We’re not giving this guy away. We’ll see where it goes.’”

The Rangers were near the finish line in a deal with the Canucks that would have reportedly sent Rangers center Filip Chytil, defenseman Ryan Lindgren and some future-focused assets. However, conditions on a first-round pick that was to be involved dissolved the potential trade.

Now, the Devils have stepped in the mix in addition to the Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars.

In terms of futures, the Devils don’t own their first round pick this season. However, they do have futures to deal on the blueline in the form of Seamus Casey, Anton Silayev, and potentially Simon Nemec.

The Devils certainly could use a jolt right now. Their lack of depth scoring has caught up to them, and Miller is the kind of player who can revive a lineup.

Well see where this goes.
