NEWARK—In the New Jersey Devils’ tilt with the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night, goaltender Jacob Markstrom was forced to leave the tilt with an injury.

After Dawson Mercer tied the game at one, the Bruins rushed the puck up the ice toward the Devils’ end of the ice. With the puck on the end of his stick, Bruins forward Justin Brazeau crashed the net and ran into Markstrom.

Markstrom seemingly suffered an injury as Brazeau’s momentum continued to carry him into New Jersey’s goal, yet his leg was wedged against the goal post.

Markstrom stayed down in the crease after the whistle. When he eventually tried to stand, he struggled to do so on his own. The Devils goaltender was helped off the ice by a trainer and forward Stefan Noesen. Markstrom did try to skate off on his own halfway to the bench, although he didn’t apply any pressure to his left leg on the way, nor going down the tunnel to the locker room.

Devils backup, Jake Allen, replaced Markstrom just over three minutes into the second period.

After the Devils’ victory, head coach Sheldon Keefe provided a less than ideal update on Markstrom.

“We’ll take some time before we know the full extent on [Markstrom],” Keefe explained. “I talked to him, he is in good spirits. He’s feeling a lot better than before, so that’s positive. He’s going to miss some time.”

Certainly, this isn’t ideal for the Devils.

Markstrom is New Jersey’s No.1 goaltender, and has been having a Vezina Trophy caliber season to this point.

In 35 starts this season, Markstrom’s accrued a 21-9-5 record, .912 SV%, 2.20 GAA, and three shutouts. Markstrom also ranks 10th overall in the NHL with 11.8 goals saved above expected.

The Devils received a power play as a result of the goaltender interference. Dougie Hamilton scored his seventh goal of the season to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead following the infraction.

The Devils went on to defeat the Bruins 5-1 in regulation. Allen made 16/16 saves in relief for his first victory since Nov. 23rd.
