Team Sweden Names Devils Jacob Markstrom Replacement at 4 Nations Face-Off
Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson will replace Jacob Markstrom for Team Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

As a result of the New Jersey Devils number one netminder sidelined, Team Sweden was in need of another goaltender for the 4 Nations Fave-Off. On Wednesday, they named the replacement.

Jacob Markstrom is set to be sidelined for 4–6 weeks, which means the Devils’ goaltender won’t be able to participate in the best on best tournament.
Thus, Sweden named Philadelphia Flyers goaltender, Samuel Ersson, as Markstrom’s replacement.
Barring a change to Linus Ullmark’s status, Sweden will carry a goaltending trio featuring the Ottawa Senators netminder, Ersson, and Filip Gustavsson.
Ersson will be teammates with Devils forward Jesper Bratt for the tournament.
In the 2024-25 season, Ersson owns a 15-8-2 record with two shutouts. He’s accrued a 2.77 GAA and .893 SV% in 26 starts, 27 games.
However, in his last 10 games, Ersson has come on strong, catapulting the Flyers to a five-game win streak, and winning eight games in that span with a .925 SV% and a shutout.
The Flyers’ goaltender is now one of four Philly players to take part in the world tournament. Forward Travis Konecny and defenseman Travis Sanheim will suit up for Team Canada, while Rasmus Ristolainen will play with Erik Haula and Team Finland.
Flyers head coach John Tortorella will also be at the tournament, serving as an assistant for Team USA.
The 4 Nations Face-Off won’t be Ersson’s first go at international play.
The Flyers’ netminder suited up for Sweden at the 2024 World Championships, where he accrued a 3-1 record en route to a bronze medal.
There was a solid chance that Markstrom was going to be the starting goaltender for Sweden. The Devils netminder was on his way to a Vezina caliber season with a 21-9-5 record, 2.20 GAA, .912 SV%, and three shutouts. His stellar play in the month of December earned him third star honors in the NHL.
It’s likely that Sweden names one of Ullmark or Gustavsson as their starter for the tournament.
