Devils Reveal Nico Hischier Injury Timeline; Jack Hughes Improving
According to Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe, it’s good news for Jack Hughes’ injury, but not so good news for Nico Hischier.

NEWARK—Another hit in a crucial part of the season. The New Jersey Devils revealed on Wednesday that captain Nico Hischier will be sidelined with an upper-body injury.
Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe labeled Hischier as “week-to-week.”
“He’s obviously not available and will be week-to-week,” Keefe explained Wednesday morning. “Something I think they’ll evaluate again next week and then take it from there. But he won’t be available this week for sure.”
A Devils spokesperson explained Hischier hasn’t been ruled out through the 4 Nations break, however, have not disclosed if they believe he could return before it, either.
Brian Halonen has since been recalled from the American Hockey League. He played in New Jersey’s tilt on Monday with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Certainly, the Hischier injury isn’t an ideal one. The Devils are already minus their No.1 goaltender, Jacob Markstrom. Now, they have to overcome the obstacle of being without their leading goalscorer.
All the credit to Hischier. The Devils captain tried to tough it out. After the cross-check by Montreal Canadiens forward Nick Suzuki last Saturday, Hischier took one more shift in the second period, and tried another in the third before ultimately ruling himself out for the remainder of the game.
In their first game without their captain, the Devils suffered a 4-2 loss in regulation to the Flyers.
The good news? Jack Hughes‘ finger is improving.
He suffered a finger laceration against the Boston Bruins, however, hasn’t missed any game time. Yet, the Devils star has sat out of morning skates and practices. That was until Wednesday’s morning skate, where Hughes was a late entrant, but a full participant.
“Yeah, lots,” Keefe explained when asked if Hughes’ finger has improved. “He’s working his way back to 100%. The cut and the pain associated with it, it was a pretty nasty cut. But, they got it sewn back together for him, and he’s coming around the other side of it here.”
The Devils and Flyers run it back after Monday’s game on Wednesday night at 7 P.M.
