The endless speculation that went on for weeks is finally over. In another Friday night NHL trade, New Jersey Devils rival, the New York Rangers acquire J.T. Miller and defensemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom from the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night.

In exchange, the Canucks are receiving forward Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini, and a top-13 protected first-round pick in 2025.

The Canucks aren’t retaining any salary as part of the deal.

Miller waived his no-move clause to be moved to Broadway.

The Devils were reportedly in the mix for the former Canucks center. However, they were never seen as serious of a suitor as other inquiring teams. They remain in the NHL trade market for depth scoring.

Miller spent the first five-plus season in New York, from his age-19 season through age-24. He was then traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017-18.

In six-plus seasons with the Canucks, Miller scored 152 goals and 437 points in 404 games. Miller registered his best season of his career in 2023-24, recording 37 goals and 103 points, and was named an All-Star.

This season, Miller’s offensive output has dipped. He’s collected nine goals and 35 points in 40 games. He took a leave of absence from in November and missed nearly a months-worth of games.

Now, Miller heads back to the team who took him in the first round of the 2011 NHL Draft, 15th overall.

In his first six seasons playing for the Blueshirts, Miller registered 72 goals and 172 points in 341 games.

The Canucks still have balls in the air. There’s word that they could still trade Elias Pettersson.

Brock Boeser is another name that could be on the move due to his expiring status as a pending free agent.

The Devils’ rival is still outside the playoff picture looking in. However, the acquisition of Miller certainly makes them a better team, and they’re only five points out of the wild card.
