Key Devils Defenseman Injured vs. Penguins, Expert Predicts Injury & Recovery Timeline
After an injury against the Penguins, Devils Jonas Siegenthaler is going to miss time. An expert predicts the injury and recovery timeline.

The 4 Nations Face-Off break cannot come soon enough for the New Jersey Devils. It was another bittersweet victory on Tuesday after the Devils pulled out the extra point in the shootout, despite another key injury.

In the first period against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler was transitioning the puck from the defensive zone. Penguins forward Anthony Beauvillier chased Siegenthaler, attempting to finish the sequence by laying a hit on the Devils defenseman. Yet, before Beauvillier could make contact, Siegenthaler took an awkward spill on his own, and struggled to get back to his feet.

Siegenthaler evidently injured his right leg, as he was unable to apply any pressure to it while trying to exit the ice. A Devils trainer eventually helped Siegenthaler to the locker room, where he would remain for the rest of the game.
The update provided by head coach Sheldon Keefe was not an optimistic one.
“[Siegenthaler] is going to miss time, for sure,” Keefe explained after the victory. “We have to get him evaluated.”
Add Siegenthaler to the list of injured Devils this season. They just got Erik Haula back on Tuesday night, but now out goes the Devils defenseman, in addition to Nico Hischier and Jacob Markstrom.
Dr. Harajas Grewal tries to predict the injury and timeline remotely.
“Concern is a right high ankle sprain and/or MCL injury for Siegenthaler,” Grewal posted via X. “Time off depends on grade, sometimes listed as day-to-day but more often week-to-week and even 4–6 weeks out”
The Devils have two more games on the schedule before the two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Currently, the Devils don’t have a body on the roster to replace Siegenthaler. They could activate Santeri Hatakka off injured reserve, who told New Jersey Hockey Now he’s “ready to go,” and fill the IR spot with Siegenthaler.
Or perhaps a recall is in order. Perhaps Seamus Casey, who performed well on his off-side, or the scorching hot Simon Nemec down in the American Hockey League.
The still playoff-bound Devils cannot get to the 4 Nations break fast enough.
