The New Jersey Devils have been without their captain for four games, and as of Thursday it will be five. He’s not expected to return to the Devils before the 4 Nations Face-Off break, thus he will miss six games overall before the world tournament. However, that could be all, as the Devils’ head coach provided a positive update on the captain Thursday morning.

Following morning skate, Sheldon Keefe explained things are going well in Nico Hischier‘s recovery. So well, that he’s skating, and an even more encouraging sign for his return.

“Yeah, he’s back on the ice,” Keefe explained to the media. “He’s not going to be available at this point this week. But, with the way it’s trending, it would be a surprise if he’s not available when we return from the break.”

Hischier took a cross-check from Montreal Canadiens captain, Nick Suzuki, to the mid-section on Jan. 25th. By the way the Devils captain was laboring in pain on the bench following the interaction, Hischier appeared to be holding his ribs, although his injury is undisclosed.

Hischier tried to finish the contest, taking one more short shift in the second period, and another in the third before pulling himself out of the game.

Since Hischier’s absence, New Jersey is 2-2-0 in four games.

If all goes according to plan, it sounds like Hischier will return on Feb. 22nd, the first game back from the 4 Nations break. The Devils will host the Dallas Stars at the Prudential Center at 6 P.M. EST.

The Devils’ head coach was also asked about the status of injured Jonas Siegenthaler. Keefe explained the Devils’ defenseman is still undergoing evaluation for his injury.
