After the New Jersey Devils suffered another significant injury on Tuesday, it was obvious they were going to need a defenseman. Simon Nemec is the answer.

The Devils announced Thursday morning that they’ve recalled their top defense prospect from the American Hockey League, and subsequently have placed Nico Hischier on the injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 25th.

Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler became injured on Tuesday in the first period of the Devils’ tilt with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He did not return to the game.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe explained Siegenthaler, “Will miss some time.”

Thus, Nemec has been recalled and will join the Devils for their morning skate ahead of Thursday’s tilt with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Nemec is a right-shot defenseman, whereas Siegenthaler is a left-shot. He’s not a one-for-one replacement, so it is to be determined who will move to their off-side on the blueline.

Nemec just wrapped up serving as the Utica Comets’ representative at the AHL All-Star Classic. In his last 10 games with Utica, Nemec accrued 11 points (2g, 11a).

Earlier this season, Nemec’s name appeared in NHL trade rumors as a result of comments he made in a Slovakian outlet that were taken out of translation. Those rumors have since hushed after New Jersey Hockey Now confirmed they had no interest in moving on from the player, and were not aware of any frustration with the 2022-second overall selection.

Nemec played 60 games with the Devils last season, stepping in for the injured Dougie Hamilton. He accrued three goals and 19 points in that span.

The Slovakian defenseman played the Devils’ first nine games this season, accruing one assist, before he was reassigned to Utica.
