The New Jersey Devils returned to the ice for the first time since their 4-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 8th. The first practice as the NHL schedule returns as we await the 4 Nations championship brought a mixed bag of news.

4 Nations participants, especially Jack Hughes, were not in attendance of the Devils’ first practice.

Jesper Bratt and Erik Haula were only eliminated on Monday, and can be expected back with the Devils by Friday the latest. Earlier on Tuesday, the Devils recalled goaltender Tyler Brennan, forward Chase Stillman, and defensemen Seamus Casey and Simon Nemec from the Utica Comets.

Casey and Stillman will arrive to Newark on Wednesday after traveling from Utica.

Everyone not named Nemec came as a surprise on recall. It was a result of New Jersey moving Jacob Markstrom and Jonas Siegenthaler to the injured reserve. Nico Daws has typically played as Jake Allen’s backup, however, Head coach Sheldon Keefe explained Daws is dealing with an illness.

Brennan’s recall while monitoring Daws’ health is a “day to day” thing, Keefe explained.

The Devils also announced Siegenthaler underwent a procedure during the 4 Nations break and will be reevaluated in 2–3 weeks.

He will miss some time, seemingly through March, if not more.

Okay, now to the positive.

Before the break, Keefe explained he would be surprised if captain Nico Hischier wasn’t good to go. The Devils’ captain was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice, taking his spot back between Timo Meier and Dawson Mercer.

Hischier explained he was dealing with an oblique injury as a result of the cross-check he took against Nick Suzuki versus the Canadiens that saw him miss the Devils’ last six games.

“I took a weird cross-check there, but I feel better now. I had a great break, and it feels good to be back out there. It’s fun to be back with a recharged battery,” Hischier explained to the media on Tuesday.
