The hits keep coming, and they won’t stop coming. In the first period of the New Jersey Devils’ tilt with the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night, defenseman Dougie Hamilton became injured with a lower-body injury.

Certainly, the timing couldn’t be worse. New Jersey is going to be without their superstar and No.1 center Jack Hughes. For how long is still unknown, but the whispers are saying it’s not good. It could be a while.

Now, Hamilton exits Tuesday night’s game with an injury after becoming tied up with Stars forward Mason Marchment.

Below the Devils’ goal line, Hamilton played the puck in battle with Marchment. The skaters’ ankles locked, and the New Jersey defenseman’s leg was pinned up against the board.

Hamilton limped off following the collision, however, remained on New Jersey’s bench talking with trainers.

With not much time left in the opening frame, the buzzer rang and the Devils and Stars went to their respective locker rooms. Hamilton was seen limping to the room, applying little pressure to his right leg.

When the Devils and Stars took the ice for the second period, New Jersey’s No.1 defenseman did not emerge with New Jersey.

Trailing 1-0 in the middle frame, New Jersey operated with five defensemen in Hamilton’s absence.

According to reports, the Devils are in the NHL trade market, and are potentially seeking a depth defenseman. We’ll see if that changes with the possibility that the Devils will be without Hamilton now, too.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald‘s list of needs is potentially growing for this Friday’s NHL trade deadline.

One thing is for sure, the Devils remain in the market as buyers.
