Devils Trade Facilitates Trent Frederic Deal to Oilers
The Devils are retaining 50% of Trent Frederic’s salary after flipping him to the Edmonton Oilers.

For a while, the New Jersey Devils had been linked to Boston Bruins forward, Trent Frederic. A Devils trade made that a reality, but only for a moment, as New Jersey facilitated a trade that sent the former Bruin to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Devils retained 50% of Frederic’s contract, after the Bruins already retained an initial 50% of his $2.3 million contract, and acquired prospect forward Shane LaChance from Edmonton. Thus, Frederic’s cap hit against the Devils is $575K for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
The Oilers received Frederic and the rights to unsigned prospect Petr Hauser. The Bruins receive defense prospect Max Wanner, a 2025-second round pick (from St. Louis), and a 2026 fourth (via Edmonton).
According to the press release, “LaChance, 21, is in his second season with Boston University (Hockey East) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) level. The 6’5”, 220lbs forward has recorded 25 points (10g-15a) in 32 games this season. His goals, assists, and points totals all rank in the top five for Boston skaters in 2024-25, while his five game-winning goals rank second (tied) on the team.
“The left-handed shot has totaled 52 career points (23g-29a) in 72 games at the NCAA level and was named team captain for the 2024-25 campaign. Last season, LaChance was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 4, 2023. He also earned Hockey East All-Academic honors in, 2023-24.”
The Devils trade to broker Frederic to Edmonton does not change New Jersey’s status as buyers, New Jersey Hockey Now has learned per a source.
New Jersey still awaits the status of Jack Hughes, who looked to have suffered a brutal injury on Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
General manager Tom Fitzgerald is still interested in a Devils trade for a center and scoring help.
The Devils did have interest in Frederic as an option for their roster, however, he lands in Edmonton through New Jersey.
