It’s the news the New Jersey Devils and their fans feared. The Devils’ franchise center’s season is over.

According to the Devils, Jack Hughes had successful shoulder surgery on Wednesday. He is done for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, including the playoffs. He’s expected to make a full recovery and be ready for training camp in Fall 2025.

According to the release, “Following a review of the imaging and subsequent conversations with Jack, his family, representatives, and the Devils’ medical and athlete care staffs, it was determined that Jack would proceed with shoulder surgery.

“He underwent the successful procedure earlier today, which was performed by Dr. Peter Millett at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado.”

Hughes has been subsequently placed on long-term injured reserve. He joins Jonas Siegenthaler, who is dealing with a lower-body injury himself.

Dougie Hamilton is also injured, and we’re awaiting an update on the defenseman.

So, how does this impact the Devils’ NHL trade deadline plans?

Well, it doesn’t.

According to a source, GM Tom Fitzgerald is still going into the deadline as a buyer.

On Tuesday, New Jersey Hockey Now learned the Devils already placed a call to the Carolina Hurricanes to inquire on Mikko Rantanen. If he becomes available, New Jersey explained they’d like to be in the mix.

If the Devils anticipate being in on the potential top player on the NHL Trade market, you can count them in on just about anyone.

That includes Brock Nelson, Brock Boeser, Casey Mittelstadt, Kyle Palmieri, among others.

The Devils are also seeking depth scoring. Jake Evans is no longer available. Ryan Donato could become a focus for New Jersey. There are whispers the New Jersey could be after a defenseman as well.

As of Wednesday, New Jersey has $13,127,231 to spend in the LTIR pool.

The NHL trade deadline is on Friday at 3 P.M. We’ll see where this goes.
