NJHN Daily: Devils Underwhelm; NHL Trade Deadline Wrap; Shocking Bruins Deal

New Jersey Devils

Yesterday’s 2025 NHL Trade Deadline results were mixed. There were some bangers, and there were some underwhelming results. Put the New Jersey Devils in the underwhelming category. They had the prime opportunity with a boatload of cap space to support their healthy stars in lieu of losing Jack Hughes for the remainder of the year. Yet, the stumbled, and only made minor additions.

More on the Devils’ underwhelming deadline below.

NHL clubs made 24 trades involving 47 players today prior to the 3 p.m., ET, trade deadline. There certainly have been more active deadlines, but this one still made a pretty big impact.

The National Hockey Now network, including yours truly, had all the coverage.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils planned to take a big swing at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. Instead, they failed to reinforce the questionable offense.

More NJHN: The Devils did make some underwhelming minor adds. Here’s how each Devils trade shook out:

Daniel Sprong & Daniel Cholowski

Cody Glass

Perhaps, the biggest news of the day was Johnathan Kovacevic signing a long-term extension with the Devils. It raises major questions, however. Such as, what happens to Simon Nemec and Seamus Casey with the right side of the defense core locked up?

The Devils were also in talks with the St. Louis Blues regarding their captain Brayden Schenn. Word is that St. Louis was asking for too much in return, and he ultimately remained in St. Louis.

And after a long day of waiting for the other shoe to drop, and then when it didn’t, the Devils had a game to play. They played low-event hockey and were outclassed by the Winnipeg Jets.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Maybe this is one we should have seen coming. The Pittsburgh Penguins sold some parts, one to the Devils, but continued their retool. Kyle Dubas phoned Toronto and reeled in his former, now current defenseman, Connor Timmins.

Boston Hockey Now: Not many expected the Boston Bruins to kind of tear it down the way they did. It wasn’t a total tear down, but they sent Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche in a surprise trade, and fetched a pretty nice return.

San Jose Hockey Now: Should San Jose Sharks fans trust GM Mike Grier? He didn’t go into the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline with plans to move Fabian Zetterlund and Jake Walman. Did he get enough in return?

Colorado Hockey Now: This was the biggest news of the day. Word started to surface on Thursday night that Mikko Rantanen could be headed to the Dallas Stars. The former Colorado Avalanche star, in fact, landed there, and signed a monster extension.

Florida Hockey Now: There’s no doubt about it. We’re living in Bizzaro World. Part of the Bruins’ retool shocked the hockey world when they sent captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers. That’s right, the Panthers can now ice a line of Marchand, Sam Bennet, and Matthew Tkachuk. It will be must-see TV.

NYI Hockey Now: After the New York Islanders traded Brock Nelson on Thursday night and reeled in some incredible value, they had a golden opportunity on Friday to continue their retool. Instead, they missed their golden opportunity and stood pat.

Philly Hockey Now: Another one of the forwards the Devils were interested in was Scott Laughton. The Philadelphia Flyers traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs, fetching a valuable return.

Chicago Hockey Now: After trading Seth Jones ahead of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, the Chicago Blackhawks were minimally involved on Friday. Still, GM Kyle Davidson made some calculated moves. Here’s how he set himself up for a big summer.

Ottawa Hockey Now: This was one of the more surprising deals of the day. The Ottawa Senators traded away Josh Norris to the Buffalo Sabres, but reeled in Dylan Cozens. It was an emotional shock for Brady Tkachuk.

The Athletic ($): How did every team do at the NHL Trade Deadline? The Athletic staff graded each teams Friday, and it aligns with our thinking that the Devils fetched an underwhelming return.
