Dougie Hamilton’s Season is Over, Devils GM Says

The News regarding New Jersey Devils No.1 defenseman already wasn’t great. According to general manager Tom Fitzgerald, it just got worse.

Sitting as a guest on the Krackin’ Canuckleheads podcast, the Devils GM explained Hamilton’s season is over. When prompted if Hamilton would return before the end of the regular season, Fitzgerald said the injury will extend into the playoffs, and a return even then is questionable.
“I think [Hamilton’s recovery] will go into the second-round,” Fitzgerald explained. “I have to go back and do the math, there’s a possibility [he returns], but we’re not planning on it. This is what we have.”
Previously, Fitzgerald explained Hamilton was going to be out for an “extended period of time,” in a press conference following the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline.
Hamilton suffered a lower-body injury on March 4th versus the Dallas Stars. The injury is undisclosed, although it appears it was an apparent leg injury after Hamilton hobbled off the ice and back to the Devils’ locker room.
It’s now back-to-back seasons where the Devils lose Hamilton to a season-ending injury. Likewise for Jack Hughes, two devastating injuries, especially after losing Jonas Siegenthaler for the remainder of the regular season as well.
The Devils’ injury luck has been quite poor. New Jersey isn’t as decimated as they were last season. Yet, their most important players have all suffered significant injuries.
New Jersey currently sits in third place in the Metropolitan Division, holding a spot in the playoffs. They widened the gap on Tuesday by defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are on their tail in the playoff race. However, the Devils’ road to the postseason just became that much more difficult upon learning their No.1 defenseman won’t be making a return down the stretch of a crucial set of games.
