Devils Trade Stipulation with Canadiens for Jake Allen Fulfilled, Finalized
The New Jersey Devils send the Montreal Canadiens a 2025 third round pick in exchange for Jake Allen, fulfilling the trade made at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.

Now that the tilt with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday is over, the New Jersey Devils trade for Jake Allen with the Montreal Canadiens has been fulfilled.
It’s good news for New Jersey, as they will keep their second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
At the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, the Devils traded a conditional 2025 third-round pick to the Canadiens in exchange for Jake Allen at 50% retained salary.
The stipulation on the Devils trade was the third-round pick will become New Jersey’s second-round pick in 2025 if Allen plays in 40 or more games during the 2024-25 season and if Allen’s club at that time (New Jersey or otherwise) qualifies for the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
For a little while, there was a realistic scenario where Allen might have met the 40- game mark this season after Jacob Markstrom became injured. However, Markstrom’s timely recovery made it so that Allen could not reach the 40-game threshold that would have fulfilled the deal.
Saturday was New Jersey’s 68th game of the season. To this point, Allen has appeared in 25 Devils games. Therefore, with 14 games remaining on the schedule, even if Allen made an appearance in each tilt moving forward, the max amount of games Allen could play in for the 2024-25 campaign is 39 games.
Markstrom made the start against the Penguins on Saturday, marking the Swedish netminders 41st game this season. Nico Daws played in five games this year as well.
The Devils will go into the 2025 NHL Draft with two second-round picks as a result. Their own, and one of the Winnipeg Jets or Edmonton Oilers’ pick.
A Devils trade stipulation with the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Brian Dumoulin states Anaheim will receive which ever pick between Winnipeg and Edmonton is higher in the draft.
Despite sending the Canadiens their third-round pick in 2025, New Jersey will still have a selection in the third-round from the Vegas Golden Knights via the Paul Cotter trade.
Allen has been stellar for the Devils this season. Despite an 11-13-1 record, the 34-year-old netminder boasts a 2.60 GAA, .910 SV% and four shutouts. He also ranks sixth overall in the NHL with a 17.0 goals saved above expected.
Allen is a pending unrestricted free agent this summer.
