Jacob Markstrom Open to Extension With Devils
New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom reveals he’s open to signing an extension, entering the final year of his contract.

NEWARK–Jacob Markstrom has another year left on his contract following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. However, eligible to sign an extension on July 1st, the New Jersey Devils goaltender explained he would welcome the idea.
At exit interviews as players cleared out their lockers, Jacob Markstrom didn’t hesitate to explain he’d love to extend his stay in New Jersey.
“If [Tom Fitzgerald] is calling, I’m answering,” Markstrom said to New Jersey Hockey Now.
The Devils general manager acquired Markstrom last summer in order to improve their goaltending for the 2024-25 season and beyond.
Markstrom ended the season with a 26-16-6 record, registering four shutouts with a 2.50 GAA and .900 SV%.
Despite his 1-4 record in the playoffs, Markstrom accrued a strong 2.78 GAA and .911 SV%.
While the team fell short in the playoffs, Markstrom’s performance in net gave the organization and fans hope for next season’s crease stability. With one year left on his contract, the Devils now face a decision on how to proceed with their starting goaltender.
Markstrom had say in where he went before he was traded to New Jersey. Part of the reason he was open to going to the Devils is because he saw them as a team who had a chance to succeed in the playoffs and compete for a championship.
With a full season in New Jersey under his belt, Markstrom believes in the Devils even more, now.
“Yeah, even more so I think, you know? Like I said, [we’re] not far off,” Markstrom said when asked if he thought the Devils were close to competing for a championship. “We just got to do a few things a little bit differently. The goal is to play a little bit better, and that’s it.”
The Devils’ long-term goaltending situation is anything but solidified. Markstrom’s deal ends July 1st 2026, as does Nico Daws who is in the running to back Markstrom up next season, barring Jake Allen departs as an unrestricted free agent.
Regardless, Markstrom proved he was an elite No.1 goaltender this season. Entering his age 36 season, he wants to remain in New Jersey.
